  • Tip Rating:

  • The Stinking Rose is an odd place. Everything smells of garlic and so will you if you go there. It's on Columbus Avenue between Chinatown and Little Italy. I think it is on the 300 block (side of the street with odd house numbers).

Straits Cafe: The Straits Cafe Singapore...
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Straits Cafe Singapore Restaurant is a nice place with indoor palm trees. Located on Geary Boulevard in the Richmond District, it's away from Chinatown. It's more expensive but not extremely so. The food is good so it's not a 'just atmosphere' type restaurant.

They serve Laska, of course! It's a slightly spicy soup that people outside of Singapore have the misfortune of not eating very often or at all. The soup usually has shrimp, cockles, and noodles with a slight coconut taste.

Address: Geary Blvd. in the Richmond District
Directions: It's on the north side of the street (on the right heading away from downtown and Chinatown) after the tunnel. If you see the Office Max, you have passed it by about 1000 metres (8 blocks?)

  • Tip Rating:

  • One of many good Chinese restaurants that the locals go to eat is Mon Kiang Restaurant (pronounced by the locals as 'moi kang', you will not be laughed at if you simply say 'mon kiang'). It is on the 600 block (south side of street) of Broadway. The decor is no nonsense. Plain tables, loud clanging of dishes, harsh lighting. One goes there to eat and hear the dishes make noise.
Not too unique, this and other restaurants do have take-away (called take-out). They don't advertise it but if you walk in, don't sit down, and tell the waiter that you want to take out, they will do it.

San Francisco is a great town. But, you GOTTA try staying at the Mansion Hotel over on Sacramento Street. (check my page for photos!) Good info.
