Foreign visitors sometimes visit Trollhattan because of the SAAB car museum. There is more to see than just the car museum.
The city grew as locks were built on the Gota River which allowed boats to use the river for industrial use.
Trollhattan has about 50,000 people and neighboring Vanersborg has about 40,000.
In recent years, Trollhattan has become an important city in Swedish film production. It is said that half of all film production in Sweden is in or near Trollhattan. This has help the local economy. In the mid 1990's, unemployment was as high as 19% but it is now about 5%. Dogville, staring Nicole Kidman, was among the many film made in Trollhattan.
Besides the SAAB car factory, there are also other industries. Locomotives were made in the building that now houses the SAAB car museum. It was enlarged to fill an order for 1,000 locomotives by Lenin decades ago. The order was later reduced to 500.
Volvo Aero (formerly Volvo Flygmotor AB) produces jet engine and rocket components in Trollhattan. It produced the engine for the SAAB Viggen fighter jet (ordered or operated by the air forces in Sweden, South Africa, Hungary and the Czech Republic) |
