Sydney Warnings Or Dangers

You may never want to leave!: Not a true warning, but a...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not a true warning, but a place to put a farewell photo. The Opera House at dusk and a small ferry passing by. A trip to Sydney always ends too soon! Some real warnings are listed under this heading.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Careful when crossing the street, particularly if you live in a country which drives right (most countries, but not the UK, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, etc.). There is a tendency to look the wrong way and get the back of your head hit by a passing car.

Money Changing: These days, many people...
  • Tip Rating:
  • These days, many people exchange money by using their bank cards at ATM machines. If you change currency, St. George Bank offers a better rate than the airport currency exchanges. St. George's had a A$1=US 0.5478 with a flat rate A$5.40 commission when I was there. The airport was offering about $0.5731 with a commission (possibly 2%?). For small amounts, there were places on George St. that did not charge commission. If you don't have any Australian currency, taxis accept many credit cards, but not Visa. If you take the bus, you may be out of luck and need to exchange money. (NB: I have no affiliation or own any shares in that bank).

  • Tip Rating:
  • In case of emergency, the emergency number in Sydney is '000', not '999' or '911' as in some countries.

  • Tip Rating:
  • If someone mentions the Westfield Shoppingtown, you should be aware that there are several of them. I think Westfield is the largest shopping centre developer in the world. If I'm not mistaken, the Lowy family, who came to Australia from Hungary via Israel, controls the company. There's a Westfield in Parramatta, one near Bondi Junction, a Westfield Plaza in Chatswood, a Westfield Centrepoint where Sydney Tower is located, and probably 50 more Westfields.

  • Tip Rating:
  • There was a story in the Sydney Morning Herald about drug related crime in Ashfield. Ashfield is west of the CBD but not as far west as Olympic Park.
