Know your hotel name and reputation

Singaporeans often ask which hotel you are staying. They also like to ask which airline you flew to Singapore on.

I wonder why? Does this mean that you should never stay at a "no-tell" motel (seedy hotel which charges by the hour)?

I've stayed at the Royal Plaza on Scotts (a nice hotel that is up to par with hotels like the Marriott and maybe even a bit better as it has the nice, free breakfast buffet with full of choices and it's also a tad bit cheaper), Copthorne Orchid (not bad, a little out of the way, plans to convert this hotel to condos, in a nice neighborhood), Hotel Phoenix (closed and the building torn down), New 7th Storey Hotel (not a bad location, cheaper, not run down at all, a bit of street noise, has cheaper rooms without baths but I didn't stay in those). With some flights arriving at 1 a.m., I looking forward to the new Crowne Plaza opening up soon just across from Terminal 3 at Changi Airport.

As far as airline, maybe they want to know if you experienced the hospitality of Singapore Airlines. I flew on one of the two U.S. non-stop flights. Both are flown by a long range Airbus A340-500 fitted with a more spacious coach (executiveconomy) and business class (Raffles Class).

Hotel Phoenix Singapore: Hotel Phoenix/Specialists' Shopping Centre closed Hotel Phoenix Singapore Review

The hotel was a nice hotel less expensive than the luxury hotels but at the higher end of moderate. It was located above the Specialists' Shopping Centre. Unfortunately, the shopping centre and hotel were torn down in late 2007. The shopping centre was one of the oldest in Singapore and was situated next to a parking lot. The new building will use all both spaces. In 2008, there was construction. The Somerset MRT remains open.

Transit Hotel: must meet requirements! - Singapore
Ambassador Transit Hotel, Changi Airport: Transit Hotel: must meet requirements! Ambassador Transit Hotel Terminal 1 Review

For those with connecting flights in Singapore, you are allowed to stay at the Transit Hotel which is located after the immigration checkpoints in Terminal 1 and 2. Recently, I arrived at 1 a.m. and did not want to go into the city to a hotel. The Transit Hotel did allow me to stay even though I was not a transit passenger. People who have not checked into their flights do not have access to the airside part of the terminal where the transit hotels are located.

The Changi airport website has a link. In 2006, a single room was about $57 (approx. US$40) with a bath and cheaper for a shared bath.

The hotel is quiet even though about half of the rooms in the Terminal 1 transit hotel overlook the gates. You may enjoy the view although you will only have a view of one gate.

Here's a photo of some of the free internet terminals in Terminal 2. There is free internet in Terminal 1 and 2. I do not know if they are available in the new Budget Terminal.

Unique Qualities: Very convenient for airport passengers.

Address: Terminal 1 and 2 (airside), Changi Airport.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Price: US$40-80

Carrefour or Cold Storage, not the hotel mini-bar

As in any country, the snacks in the hotel minibar are always much more expensive than if you bought them in a store. Many petrol stations have snacks. Cold Storage is a supermarket located in many locations. Carrefour is a French brand with two locations, one of them in Suntec City (connected but a fair distance from MRT City Hall), the other in Plaza Singapura (MRT Dhoby Ghaut). Both have websites. One of the many Cold Storage stores is in Dunearn Road near (and west) of Newton Circus but not as far away from the city centre as the Chinese Girl's School. There is also one in Centrepoint (across the street from the Somerset MRT Orchard Road way out/entrance).
