Alligators are a part of South Florida. They are commonly found in the lakes and once in a while, in someones unkempt pool. No wonder you don't see so many dogs running around the neighborhoods.

Is the Soft Shell Turtle. These guys are found everywhere in South Florida. They grow quite large. I personally have seen the turtles more than 1/2 meter long.
