Carlisle Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Alleys
  • Tip Rating:
  • Carlisle is built on a grid of streets between which there exists also a grid of alleys.

You can actually walk from one end of town to the other using solely the alleys, which are quieter than the streets, and attractive in their slightly run down way.

Off The Beaten Path: Secret P.O.W. Camp Crumbling in the Forest
  • Tip Rating:
  • Close to Carlisle (technically in Gardners, PA), you will find the large Michaux Forest. It is a wonderful area for steep hikes and dramatic vistas (see travelogue "South Mountain Area"). Well hidden, near Michaux Road, there are the ruins of a once top secret P.O.W. camp for German U-Boat crews. It sounds more interesting than it is: there is little to see. The P.O.W. Camp was turned into a Presbyterian campground before being abandoned. This is, incidentally, the middle point of the Appalachian Trail (Pine Grove Furnace State Park).
