"Flores, the Island Town on Lake Peten Itza" Top 5 Page for this destination Flores by calcaf38

Flores Travel Guide: 72 reviews and 201 photos

Flores is an attractive small town squeezed on a tiny island on Lake Peten Itza. It is linked to the shore by a short causeway. On the shore is the larger but less fancy town of Santa Elena.

Flores and Santa Elena constitute the largest city in the province of El Peten, and, to most visitors, the gateway to Tikal.

Flores is built on a grid system, with a Parque Central on a hill and a sort of beach all around with restaurants and cafes. Opposite Flores on the other side of the lake, you can climb a mirador with a good view. Santa Elena is also worth a visit through its bustling market.

Flores is a tourist destination, but less intensely so than Antigua Guatemala. Flores is harder to reach, hotter, and buggier. This tends to screen out the dreaded "luxury traveler".

In my experience, it is perfectly fine to arrive in Flores without reservations or preparations for your visit to Tikal. The town - and what it has to offer - is easy to grasp. There are several internet cafes in Flores.

Pros and Cons

Great page :) The hotel looks lovely and the town very photogenic and ripe for exploration. Guatamala's on my wish-list - like most of Central America!

Really nice page - and the hotel looks very nice, but I can imagine bugs and all sorts coming up out of that water or environment at night?

A fine-looking island town. Glad to hear it's hot and buggy enough to screen out the dreaded "luxury traveler". Cool Beans is the first coffee place I have heard of that provides a free shower and free condoms -- can you imagine Starbucks doing that?

"Don't look now" but you've made a good page. Makes me wish I would've spent some time here. Thank you!

A beautiful opening view from the mirador! Too bad we didn't have time to squeeze Flores in on our Tikal trip, but it was a joy to read your page. It really is a lush looking spot and I agree, it is nice to swap travel stories with other visitors!

I wish people would stop smugling animals. I get so upset with that! Great page here though ;-)
