Flores is an attractive small town squeezed on a tiny island on Lake Peten Itza. It is linked to the shore by a short causeway. On the shore is the larger but less fancy town of Santa Elena.
Flores and Santa Elena constitute the largest city in the province of El Peten, and, to most visitors, the gateway to Tikal.
Flores is built on a grid system, with a Parque Central on a hill and a sort of beach all around with restaurants and cafes. Opposite Flores on the other side of the lake, you can climb a mirador with a good view. Santa Elena is also worth a visit through its bustling market.
Flores is a tourist destination, but less intensely so than Antigua Guatemala. Flores is harder to reach, hotter, and buggier. This tends to screen out the dreaded "luxury traveler".
In my experience, it is perfectly fine to arrive in Flores without reservations or preparations for your visit to Tikal. The town - and what it has to offer - is easy to grasp. There are several internet cafes in Flores. |

craic Fri Mar 27, 2009 02:09 UTC what an amusing and interesting page - i got the feel of this town with all its quirks, and it seems to have many quirks | toonsarah Thu Jul 17, 2008 10:43 UTC Great page :) The hotel looks lovely and the town very photogenic and ripe for exploration. Guatamala's on my wish-list - like most of Central America! | volopolo Sat Mar 22, 2008 15:14 UTC Great picture! | angiebabe Sun Mar 9, 2008 19:10 UTC Really nice page - and the hotel looks very nice, but I can imagine bugs and all sorts coming up out of that water or environment at night? |
