Getting TO/AROUND: Cuenca is the third most important city in Ecuador. It can be reached through short domestic flights from Guayaquil or from Quito. In order to take in the landscapes, however, traveling by bus is recommended. Buses are economical, appear to be safe, but they take longer than you might expect in a small country. Taking the bus non-stop from Quito to Cuenca (10 hours) would be an ordeal. I broke the journey in several pieces (Quito-Machachi-Pelileo-Riobamba -Alausi-Ingapirca-Cuenca) over four days, and it was pretty exhausting. Still, it allowed me to experience Ecuador, see everyday life, and talk to many people.
For the bus trip from Cuenca to Guayaquil, see two travelogues on this page, Landscapes Between Cuenca and Guayaquil.

volopolo Mon Apr 28, 2008 15:10 UTC Another excellent web site! | toonsarah Sun Apr 20, 2008 18:39 UTC Despite the very helpful warnings, I can see there is enough in Cuenca to make it a "must visit" destination for us. Thanks for the good tips on the churches and museums especially :) | Nemorino Sat Dec 8, 2007 23:55 UTC Never thought I would read about the "Pont de Nantes" nursery rhyme in a page about Ecuador. Which just goes to show, hmm, whatever. (My Google Alert just popped up to say that Vera Nemirova will stage Faust in Bonn next April.) | Bwana_Brown Thu Dec 6, 2007 09:50 UTC Quite an amazing variety of weird and wonderful attractions you found in Cuenca! It is too bad those two robberies took some of the shine off your experience, stuff like that is always upsetting . Beautiful photos in your Travelogues! |
