Barna: Where Modernity meets the Ancient

by ger4444 - last update: May 19, 2007

meet the city of dreams

Since I was a little kid, i have been in Barcelone for many times. I dont know what the city has, but every time I come there, I feel as if it's my second home. As the title of this page may suggest, it's partly because the city has, though being a Metropole, something of a village, where you still can find those litlle caf?s at the corner of the street, the marketplaces with the fish-selling madame, who knows the latest gossips about everyone in the neighborhood, and the people of the city getting excited for their Barca, as they call their local futbol club, discussing it at the streets and placa's. How lovely! (though of course, what was Barca without Cruijf!!??)The other reason is the combination of it's architecture (and by that, it's "scenery"): at the Eixamle you find Modernit?(Gaudi's buildings extending throughout this part of the city, reaching out to the Parc Guël); At the hart of the city, on the other hand you find modest, (neo)Gothic style in the buildings, breathing out just another atmosphere, U wont find in other parts of the city. Yet, Barcelona has also it's typical area's like Barcelonetta and Garcia. In Barceloneta, you can find a "working-class quarter", people in the fishing-buissiness, who have a totaly different life, who probably dont have anything to do with the life of the flaneurs walking up and down the Ramblas (that's the main street in the city center, a grand boulevard) In Garcia, there's again an other atmosphere; when you're in August in Barna, you must go there at Saint Marie: every street in that quarter has it's own way of expressing graditude: Streets with their own fiesta's, bands and local caberatiers, and of course liqueurs and Damm-cervesa, give in their way thanks to Maria. Visting these parts of the city allso gives some extra insights in the city's possibilities: f.e. Barcelonetta has a beautifull beach, there are swimming opportunities (though you should not expect that the water is claer, considering that the beach is located next to the harbour!) and you can hang around in the Olympic 2000-district near Barcelonetta. .

barca at night (1)

strolling along the ramblas at night, you see what life is during night: locals hanging at terraces, artists on the scene, crowds getting to and coming from the pubs and restaurants along barri gotic. Go to the seaside, you have the harboar life, the new fashioned and trendy clubs at the sea...making you crazy for hours, or take a look at the placa catalunya, siting at the fountain, quite a nice place for lovers. thats on the other side of Rambas. Well, you also can take a taxi and ride and experiece the beauty of eixample at night, stop at Sagarda Familia and take a breath, the beauty and wonderland is ther in front of you: enjoy it!

barca at night (2)

a favourite night spot is also the area around palau nacional. the fountain is a nice place to walk around in when you are drunk. (to get sober) it is a beutifull dreamland: the lasers behind the palace behind you and seeing the venice twin towers in the front. it will stay in your mind forever.

ok for now, i will try to give some good info's about the city and it's surroundings

Pros:"barcelona is an ugly town with only industry arcitecture"
Cons:"montjuic and tibidabo: too many views on barca from there"

Wonderful Barcelona page. Palamos indeed sounds interesting to visit and explore. Temple of Sagrada Familia certainly looks amazing. Bring back fond memories of our trip to that city several years ago. ~ho & pang
