Getting TO/AROUND: you can take a cab from there to your hotel and risk getting ripped off or take the train. Newcomers SHOULD NOT DRIVE!!!
Take the Metropolitana around the city. here is a website for train info

drive at your own risk. I did for over six months and totaled a rental car and some moped riders ran into me one time. It's common to see 2-3 on a moped at once, and I once saw a family of four on one.

The metropolitana and buses are a great way to get around, but are rather cramped most of the time. risk a hefty fine if you don't purchase a ticket. You have to purchase them at a Tabacchi store or a newsstand.
Prices: Biglietto da novanta minuti: € 0,77. (90 minutes)
Biglietto giornaliero: € 2,32. (entire day)

Tabacchi's and newsstands usually close during 'Riposa' or midday when everyone goes home for lunch.

Napolitans are getting used to seat belts. It sorta cramps their style, but the polizia is cracking down on seat belt use.

I've driven my Chevy S-10 four wheel drive truck around without incident. Even in the commune of Pianura, where my wife is from. Newcomers should take public transportation.

Unlike northern Italy, Naples is NOT bicycle friendly. I would recommend not riding a bicycle on busy auto traffic roads. Trust me.

Getting TO/AROUND: ...life or death experience at times. If you dare drive.....WATCH OUT!! I can't stress that enough. Have a co-pilot to help navigate and warn of sudden potential hazards and life ending situations.

The moped in the picture actually hit my car and knocked off my left rear view mirror. The kids were riding double w/o a helmet, but were luckily not hurt. They were in the wrong, and Mariangela, my wife, told them off in Napolitan (different than Italian).

Getting TO/AROUND: The metropolitana is the most common way to get around naples. We often must take one of the buses in conjundction with a train to reach our desired destinations. Catching the right trains and buses can be tough, but be sure to pick up one of the route maps located at newsstands in and around the train stations. The Cumana and Circumflegrea trains connect with metro stations to take you to outlying areas. To get from Pianura to downtown we take the Circumflegrea to Monte Santo, which is very close to the Centro Storico (Spaccanapoli) where Mariangela goes to school.

Getting TO/AROUND: ...you want to call them are one of the most popular means of transportation in Naples. I have never before or since so many riders in one city. You must be really attentive when walking around because they are everywhere. I'm not kidding.

The sixteen picture shot I took encompasses about 7 seconds of time, but captures a rider passing me on the left and then swerving in front of me to pass a car on the right side.

Getting TO/AROUND: I have been in serious traffic jams in Naples and some of them were caused by demonstrations in the streets. One day a bunch of people were protesting something and blocked off the street by a Tangenziale exit during evening rush hour traffic. Cars were backed up for many city blocks. Polizei didn't do anything but direct cars to go a different route. Unfortunately there was another demonstration at the "other" route we took as well.

Getting TO/AROUND: Parking in Napoli is one of the most difficult things you can do in a car. Finding a suitable spot it never easy, but when you do, the fun isn't over yet. You must ensure you are in a correct area for parking, and then if it's a pay area, you must purchase a scratch ticket to validate your time. These can be purchased at many shops around town. Try a Tabachi (Tobacco) shop or Cafe.

Getting TO/AROUND: Parking in downtown is nothing less than hell on earth. As if just trying to find your way around isn't enough, you eventually have to park, or give up and take the trains and buses. The second option won't sound so bad after you attempt to park on occasion.

There is one parking lot in the Centro Storico district just behind Santa Chiara, but getting to it is an adventure in itself. Just follow the blue "P" signs if you are in this area, and eventually you'll get there. It's convenient for exploring the heart of Naples, but also costs 2 Euro per hour, or partial hour. Make sure and secure all valuables before leaving your car, and remember your wallet, as I almost forgot mine in the car while leaving it in the lot.

Getting TO/AROUND: Whether or not any of the roads get better or not isn't the issue. What is a fact is that there always seems to be construction going on in the worst of places. This area is right in central Napoli, and causes big delays and detours. So, don't think that because you've mastered your map that things will go as planned. There will always be something to surprise you.

Transportation: Too Many Signs, Too Many Choices

Getting TO/AROUND: Driving in Naples, which as you know by now if you've read my other Naples tips, can be totally nerve racking. On top of dealing with the thousands of other cars and moped, you must be a speed reader to be able to deal with the overburdening amount of signs along the roads. This is a typical intersection in Naples. I've seen worse, but you can expect this, and whatever you do, don't pause to read them when a light is green. At least 2-3 other drivers will sound off with a horn symphony.

We just got back from a 2 week trip to Naples, Amalfi and Rome. While in Naples, we ate at Trianon twice. It is indeed THE best pizza in the world!

I so enjoyed your Naples pages & tips. I lived there for 2.5 years and my son was born there. I was there from 1975-1977--yes, the dark ages! Is Tony's Sampan Chinese restaurant near NSA Naples still there? I had an apartment in Pianura!
