Ottawa, Ontario - Capital of Canada

by HORSCHECK - last update: Feb 29, 2004

Parliament Hill and Ottawa River

In july 2000 I spent a few days of my Canada holidays in Ottawa, the capital city. Ottawa is situated on the Ontario/Quebec border, therefore it has a mixture of french and english cultures.

The shores of the Ottawa River, Rideau River and the Rideau Canal with its locks are brilliant for idyllic walks.

Ottawa offers classical architecture (e.g. Parliament Bulidings) as well as ultramodern designed buildings (e.g. National Gallery). Especially the Parliament buildings with the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill are worth a visit.

Last but not least Ottawa has plenty of shops and the Byward Market, which is loaded with cafes, bars, restaurants and market stalls.

"Tourists don't know where they've been, travelers don't know where they're going."

Pros:"Parliament Hill and its guided tours are brilliant, funny and informative."
Cons:"Underrated city between Toronto and Montreal."
In A Nutshell:"Busy capital city situated at scenic canal and river."

Parliament Hill looks full of interest and the Changing of the Guards looks like fun to watch & listen to the bagpipes too!

I've never been to Ottawa. It looks rather European somehow...

Looks like an interesting city. Glad to hear the VIA trains are still running.
