"Chernihiv - Ancient town in Northern Ukraine" Chernihiv by HORSCHECK

Chernihiv Travel Guide: 43 reviews and 114 photos

In June 2007 we visited Chernihiv (Russian spelling: Chernigov) in a daytrip from the Ukrainian capital Kiev. We went there by train and left Chernihiv by bus, therefore we saw a lot of the rural region between Kiev and Chernihiv.

Chernihiv was first mentioned in the 10th century and is therefore one of the oldest Russian towns on the territory of the present Ukraine. It is situated on the bank of the Desna River which flows into the Dnieper River. The population of Chernihiv is just below 300.000 people.

Due to its ancient history, Chernihiv is home to many sights of history and architecture like orthodox churches, cathedrals, cloisters and monasteries, some of which can already be seen from far away.

"I'm taking my thoughts to a railway station. Put 'em on a train just to see what's coming back."

An excellent page on the home of Chernihivske beer!! :-) We didn't have time to get out of Kiev, but it would have been nice to visit here.

It is great to see such nice churches in a setting that depicts traditional culture. Nice job of describing the sites.

What an informative and beautifully illustrated page. Plenty of food for the soul with all those churches but how cheaply you could feed the body there too :))

Lots of lovely churches and cathedrals in Chernihiv. They all look so alike though. Prices are very reasonable for food.

I don't know that we will get to take any daytrips from Kiev but this looks like a nice option if we do :-)

Recalls nice memories. Important tip about Ukrainian toilets but there is a McDonalds here, not so nice for eating but optimal for the other end.
