"Altdorf - In the footsteps of William Tell" Altdorf by HORSCHECK

Altdorf Travel Guide: 37 reviews and 102 photos

On a sunny day in March 2011 we took a day trip from Zurich to Altdorf. Altdorf is the capital of the canton Uri, which is one of the smallest districts of Switzerland. In 1292 Uri was one of the founding members of the Swiss Confederation.

Altdorf has only about 8.700 inhabitants and its Town Hall Square is said to be the location where the popular apple-shot of Friedrich Schiller's William Tell has taken place. Hence the famous Tell Monument can be found here, just in front of an old residential tower.

Besides this monument, Altdorf is also home to Switzerland's oldest Capuchin Convent, a few worth-seeing churches and buildings, with the Suworow House being the oldest burgher house of the canton Uri.

"Who comes here from the distant lands of men, for every road leads to the end of the world."
--- Friedrich Schiller in William Tell ---

Lovely views and interesting tips. It's a pity the place suffered in the fire in 1799. I was surprised to find out about Suvorov here.

A lovely setting for a town with those mountains as a backdrop for your photos. The one of Flueelen is especially pretty.

Nice page on this beautiful Old Village. Seems like interesting fish you had there for lunch and they have local beer, wow, it's surely worth the visit :)

Holger, thanks for your great tips on this visit to Switzerland! I would love to see it's natural wonders and also explore the quaint towns. I did not know that it was not part of the EU, but I should have - the Swiss like to do it their way!

Altdorf and Schwyz both sound like nice day trips from Zurich. Great architecture and would love to see all nine fountains of Altdorf :) Some great shots as well!

A very interesting place keeping memory about the famous Russian marshall Suworow. May be that's why Russian troops haven't been there since that times, haha! Have a nice weekend, Holger!
