Polybahn - Zürich

Polybahn

Polybahn

The funicular Polybahn is part of Zurich's public transportation network.

It links the tram stop "Central" in the lower part of Zurich with the university and is therefore mainly used by students.

The Polybahn was constructed at the end of the 19th century. Complete renovations took place in 1976 and 1996, when it reopened as UBS Polybahn.

The track length is 176 m and it takes only about 100 seconds to get from the base to the top station.

Explore Zurich by public transportation

The public transportation network of Zurich (ZVV) is said to be one of the densest in the world.

Numerous trams and buses provide daytime services from 5:00 h until 00:30 h. From Friday to Sunday special night services are available.

The public transportation also includes several boat, train and cablecar services.

Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices. Many tickets have to be validated before entering a vehicle.

To Zurich by train

The main train station (Hauptbahnhof, HBF) of Zurich is located at the northern end of the busy street Bahnhofstrasse, right in the heart of Zurich's city centre.

It is the biggest train station in Switzerland with connections to all major towns in Switzerland.

International trains provide services to Germany, Italy, France and Austria.

Zurich Airport by night - Zürich

Zurich Airport by night

To Zurich by plane

I have flown several times to Zurich from Dortmund and Cologne in Germany.

Zurich's airport is located about 12 km north of the city centre near the suburb Kloten. It has 3 terminals: A, B and E.

If your flight is to terminal E, then you have to use a skymetro train, which links terminal E with the other terminals.

Probably the easiest way to get into town is by train. A trip to the main train station takes about 15 minutes and all scheduled trains belong to the public transportation system.

Since December 2008 the airport also has a direct tram connection with the city centre. Tram #10 serves a route from the airport via the train station Oerlikon Ost to Zurich's main train station in less than 40 minutes.

A normal single ticket for both the train and the tram sets you back 6,20 CHF (2009) and can be bought from machines at the tram stops or the train station.

Free city bike - Zürich

Free city bike

Explore Zurich by free city bike

From May to October free city bikes can be rented from 6 bike stands throughout the city. To get one you have to leave your I.D. card and a deposit of 20 CHF.

Then you can head off for the whole day, but have to return your bike at the same bike stand.

The project is financed by several sponsors including the local public transport company. The bikes have 24 gears and are of really good quailty

In July 2007 we rented two of these bikes from the bike stand in Zurich Oerlikon. Our trip took us along the river Glatt to the quaint village of Oberglatt.

For more information about the location and opening times of the bike stands please check out their website.

Dolderbahn

Rack railway Dolderbahn

The Dolderbahn is a rack railway which links the Römerhof in Zurich's city centre with the Dolder on the hill Adlisberg.

The top station can be found adjacent to the Grand Hotel Dolder at 606 m.

The Dolderbahn is integrated in Zurich's public transportation system ZVV and can therefore be used with normal public transport tickets. It runs about every 10 minutes between 6:20 h and 23:30 p.m.
