Rheinfelder Bierhaus - Zürich

Rheinfelder Bierhaus

Rheinfelder Bierhaus

I visited the Rheinfelder Bierhaus twice with VT members. The first time in October 2011 and the second visit was in May 2013. Among locals the place is also known as Bloody Thumb (De Bluetig Duume).

The Rheinfelder Bierhaus is a mixture of a Swiss beer hall and a restaurant with traditional and hearty meals. Day specials are available as well. The interior of the restaurant is held in a simple wooden style. On summer days a few tables are available on the street.

In October 2011 I opted for a Swiss Cordon Bleu with fries for 23,50 CHF and a local Cardinal beer for 6,20 CHF.

In May 2013 I ordered pork schnitzel with noodles from the day specials. It was accompanied by a yummy bouillon as starter. With 21,50 CHF the menu was reasonably priced.

On both my visits service was quite quick and my dishes were filling and tasty. Waiters can be a bit rough, but that seems to be a local custom.

The Rheinfelder Bierhaus is probably one of the cheaper options in Zurich's city centre, therefore it is higly recommended for budget travellers who like to enjoy the local atmosphere of the place.

Address: Rheinfelder Bierhaus, Marktgasse 19, 8001 Zurich

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: The Rheinfelder Bierhaus is located right in the heart of Zurich's old town in the pedestrianised part of the Niederdorf area on the right side of the river Limmat.

Restaurant Dieci allo zoo - Zürich

Restaurant Dieci allo zoo

Restaurant Dieci allo zoo

Dieci is a Swiss group of Italian restaurants, pizza couriers and ice cafes. One Saturday in summer 2009 we popped in the Restaurant Dieci allo zoo.

We took a seat in the lovely outdoor garden area, which was once designed by Enzo Enea.

The menu offers traditional Italian cuisine from pizza and salads to pasta dishes.

I opted for a Pizza Melanzane which was covered with tomatoes, mozzarella, aubergines and oregano. The pizza was quite large, but a bit tasteless. With 19 CHF it was reasonably priced.

To drink I had a pint of Carlsberg (7 CHF), which came in a Schneider Weisse beer glass.

I can highly recommend a visit of this place in summer, as the outdoor garden is just fantastic, although I must admit that I expected a bit more from my pizza.

In June 2012 we returned for a second visit of the restaurant. This time I had a Pizza Rucola (22 CHF), which was excellent.

Address: Dieci allo zoo, Zürichbergstr. 231, 8044 Zürich

Directions: The Restaurant Dieci allo zoo can be found just opposite of the main entrance to Zurich's Zoo. The best way to get there from the city centre is by tram #6. Get off at its final stop "Zoo".

Chässtube Rehalp: Fondue Moite-Moite - Zürich

Chässtube Rehalp: Fondue Moite-Moite

Restaurant Chässtube Rehalp

In December 2011 we visited the Chässtube Rehalp for lunch with friends. Since 1999 the restaurant is specialised in traditional Swiss cheese fondue and raclette.

The interior of the place is kept simple in a cosy wooden style. In summer a nice garden terrace is available in front of the building.

We decided to opt for the fondue Moite-Moite, which consists of a mixture of Gruyere and Fribourg cheese. The fondue came with bread and potatoes. The price per person was 27,80 CHF.

We also ordered gherkins (cornichons) and onions (5,90 CHF). To start I had a yummy season salat (9,80 CHF). All in all we were quite delighted with our visit of the restaurant.

Address: Chässtube Rehalp, Forchstr. 359, 8008 Zurich

Comparison: about average

Directions: The Chässtube Rehalp is situated about 2,5 km south of Zurich's city centre. The best option to get there is to take tram #11 and get off at the tram stop Balgrist which is only about 200 metres away from the restaurant.

Restaurant Markthalle - Zürich

Restaurant Markthalle

Restaurant Markthalle

One late January 2012 afternoon we visited the Restaurant Markthalle for a short break with hot drinks and cakes. The restaurant, which together with a market hall nestles underneath a 19th century railway viaduct was opened in September 2010.

The interior is casual and has a bit of an industrial atmosphere. The menu offers a variety of dishes with products from the adjacent market. A selection of meals and drinks is also listed on the chalkboards above the open kitchen.

As we were here on an afternoon, we made our choice from the cakes on display. I opted for a white chocolate cake (5,50 CHF) and a Rooibos tea (4,20 CHF).

Directions: The Restaurant Markthalle can be found together with a market hall at the north eastern end of the shopping Mall "Im Viadukt".

Restaurant Tuefi: Tandoori Chicken - Zürich

Restaurant Tuefi: Tandoori Chicken

Restaurant Tuefi

Restaurant Tuefi is specialised in seasonal organic food from regional production. The menu is limited to a small but exquisite range of meat and fish dishes as well as vegetarian meals.

A reservation is recommended as the restaurant is quite small. In summer additional seating is available on the outdoor terrace. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.

In summer 2010 I had the Tandoori Chicken (34,00 CHF), a scoop of ice cream (4,90 CHF) and a shandy (5,10 CHF). My dish was very tasty and the service was friendly and attentive.

Restaurant Reithalle - Zürich

Restaurant Reithalle

Restaurant Reithalle

One warm evening in late April we had dinner in the outside courtyard of the Restaurant Reithalle. The building used to be the horse stable of the cavalry; therefore the interior and the beer garden are furnished in a rustic wooden style.

The horse watering place is integrated as a big flower pot into the nice beer garden which is much frequented by locals and tourists in the summer.

The menu consists of a wide range of Swiss and international dishes, including various vegetarian meals. They even have lunch specials. Prices are about average for Zurich.

I opted for the poultry skewers with rice and vegetables. The portion was a bit small, but please bear in mind that I had been running around Zurich the whole day and this was almost my first meal after breakfast.

To use the tolilets you have to ask the staff for a pin code, as the toilets are located in a passage of the building which is also open to the public.

Address: Reithalle, Gessner-Allee 8, 8001 Zürich

Comparison: about average

Directions: The Restaurnat Reithalle is situated near the Schanzengraben right in the busy city centre of Zurich, only about 10 minutes on foot from the main train station.

Piadina with Salami - Zürich

Piadina with Salami

Piadina Bar

A great place for a delicious snack during the day or in the evening is the Piadina Bar, which I have already visited quite a few times.

A Piadina is a backed thin Italian pitta bread combined with various fresh fillings like ham, salami, tomato or mozzarella.

Zurich's Piadina Bar is a small smoke free location. On warm days it even has a few tables outside on the shopping street to enjoy some people watching.

Address: Piadina Bar, Niederdorfstr. 2, 8001 Zürich

Directions: The Piadina Bar is located in the busy Niederdorfstrasse, which is the main pedestrianised arterie of Zurich's Old Town.

Restaurant Zeughauskeller - Zürich

Restaurant Zeughauskeller

Restaurant Zeughauskeller

The Restaurant Zeughauskeller is located in the fomer armoury of Zurich, whose history dates back to the 15the century. Since 1926 the building is home to the Restaurant Zeughauskeller.

The interior consists of large rustic tables and is decorated with remains of the old armoury.

The Zeughauskeller offers many traditional Swiss meals based on old recipes; their speciality are all sorts of Swiss sausages (Saucissons) served with potato salad.

The menu is available in many languages, including English, French and even Japanese.

I visited the place twice in 2007. The first time I opted for the Neuenburger Saucisson and the second time for the Wiediker Roschtbratwurscht (fried sausage).

Both dishes were quite filling and very delicious. To drink I usually go for the local Goldsprint beer (0,4 l) which costs 5,80 CHF.

Although the place is located in the touristy heart of Zurich, prices seem to be relatively reasonable. Please note that this is a very popular place and therefore it is strongly advised that you make a reservation, otherwise be prepared to queue for a table.

Address: Zeughauskeller, Bahnhofstrasse 28a, 8001 Zurich

Comparison: about average

Directions: The Restaurant Zeughauskeller can be found in the touristy heart of Zurich, just next to the famous Paradeplatz. The nearest tram stop is "Paradeplatz".
