Zurich - Switzerland's multicultural metropolis

by HORSCHECK - last update: Nov 2, 2009

Grossmünster and river Limmat

Since 2002 I have been to Zurich quite a few times for both holidays and business trips. It is the business centre of Switzerland, and among the world's leading financial cities.

Zurich is home to about 360.000 people, many of whom aren't Swiss. The river Limmat, the lake Zurichsee and the surrounding mountain chains with the Alps in the background give the city its worth living atmosphere.

The Old Town with its narrow alleys, old buildings and churches is probably the nicest area for a touristy stroll. In contrast to the Old Town the famous banking district offers many exclusive shops, department stores and cafes.

Zurich is well known for its efficient public transportation network, which mainly consists of trams and trolley buses. With Switzerland's busiest train station it is also a good starting point to explore the country by train.

"Well I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak."

Pros:"Gorgeous architecture and efficient public transportation system."
Cons:"Zurich is expensive, but there are always affordable alternatives."
In A Nutshell:"Financial and economic centre of Switzerland."

Me again, coming back to check out the latest updates on your transportation tips. As I mentioned, I hope to visit Zürich again this winter (because I have a new source of free opera tickets!).

Great updates since February, 2009! Loved a tip about Lenin's house. Switzerland and Zurich are still in my dreams...

Very impressive Zürich travel page with stunning images. Zürich really has lots of fine architectural buildings especially University Building and Paradeplatz. Day trip to Liechtenstein and Rhine Falls certainly sound interesting. ~ho & pang

Great updates again! I knew that ostrich-steaks are served quite often in Switzerland, because its cheaper than beef and tastes the same but I had no idea it is also possible to get kangaroo, emu or crocodile in a restaurant as well !
