Things To Do: St. Elisabeth Cathedral

  • Kosice's main landmark is the Gothic St. Elisbeth Cathedral (Dom Sv. Alzbety). It is not only the oldest building in Kosice, but also Slovakia's biggest church.

    The medieval cathedral was constructed between 1378 and 1508, but since then underwent several restorations. In the late 19th century a crypt was built under the northern nave of the cathedral.

    The interior of the cathedral is dominated by the imposing winged main altar of St. Elisabeth.

    Directions:
    St. Elisabeth Cathedral is situated in the middle of the Central Square (Hlavne namestie), just
    right in the heart of Kosice's old town (Stare Mesto).

    Things To Do: St. Michael Chapel
  • Tip Rating:
  • The history of the St. Michael Chapel (Kaplnka sv. Michala) dates back to the early 14th century and is therefore Kosice's second oldest edifice.

    It was originally built as a cemetery chapel, hence the name St. Michael, who was the patron of the dead.

    Directions:
    The St. Michael Chapel is located just south of St. Elisabeth Catherdal. It belongs to the cathedral complex at the Central Square (Hlavne namestie) in the old town (Stare Mesto).

    Things To Do: St. Urban Tower

  • The St. Urban Tower (Urbanova veza) is a medieval bell tower which was erected in the 14th century.

    Unfortunately the tower was severly damaged by fire in 1966, but reconstructed and reopened in 1971.

    The St. Urban Bell weighs 7 tonnes. Nowadays the tower is home to a wax museum which exhibits famous people of the Slovak history.

    Directions:
    Like the St. Michael Chapel also the St. Urban Tower belongs to the cathedral complex at the Central Square (Hlavne namestie) in the old town (Stare Mesto).

    Things To Do: Jakob's Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Jakob's Palace (Jakabov Palace) was built at the end of the 19th century for the rich entrepreneur Peter Jacob.

    In 1945 when Kosice was the capital of Czechoslovakia for a short period, the palace was inhabited by the Czechoslovak president Eduard Benes.

    Nowadays the oriental style building is used for representative purposes.

    Directions:
    The Jacob's Palace can be found in between the old town and the Municipal Park. When coming from the train station you will come across the palace on your way to the old town.

  • The Greek-Catholic Church of Virgin Mary's Birth (Greckokatolicky kostol narodenia Panny Marie) was built in Neo-Romanesque style in the late 19th century.

    During the communist times the church belonged to the Orthodox Church, but after 1990 it was given back to the Greek Catholics.

    Directions:
    The Church of Virgin Mary's Birth can be found in Moyzesova Street, just west of Kosice's historic city centre.

    Things To Do: Dominican Church

  • The history of the Dominican Church (Dominikansky Kostol) dates back to the late 13th century when it was built in in Gothic style.

    In the middle of the 16th century the church was completely destoyed by fire and later in the 18th century it was reconstructed in Baroque style.

    Nowadays the church belongs once again to the Dominican order.

    Directions:
    The Dominican Church is situated at the Dominikanske Square, just west of the St. Elisabeth Cathedral.

  • The Neo-Baroque building of the State Theatre (Statne divadlo) is said to be one of the most beautiful theatre buildings in Europe.

    It was completed in 1899 and since 1945 the theatre is run by the state.

    Similar to the structure of the Slovak National Theatre of Bratislava it consists of the three ensembles drama, opera and ballet.

    Directions:
    Like the Cathedral Complex, the State Theatre is situated in the very centre of Kosice's Old Town,

    Things To Do: Immaculata Statue
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Immaculata Statue commemorates the victims of the plague in 1710 and 1711. The Baroque style statue is 14 m high and was erected in 1723. On top of the column sits a sculpture of Virgin Mary.

    During WWII the statue was severly damaged and later restored a few times. The last restoration took place in 1998.

    Directions:
    The Immaculata Statue can be found at the northern end of the Main Square (Hlavne Namestie).

    Things To Do: Franciscan Church

  • The Franciscan Church (Frantiskansky Kostol) was originally finished in Gothic Style in the early 15th century.

    After a fire in the 16th century the church was used as an ammunition warehouse and for military church services.

    Like the Dominican Church, the Franciscan Church was also reconstructed in Baroque style in the 18th century. Nowadays it serves as a seminary church.

    Directions:
    The Franciscan Church is located in the northern half of the main street Halvna ulica.

  • The Old Town Hall (Stara Radnica) is a Classicistic style edifice which was finished in 1780.

    The building has recently been renovated to serve for representative purposes. Nowadays it is also home to Kosice's Tourist Information Centre.

    Directions:
    The Old Town Hall can be found just opposite to the eastern side of the State Theatre.
