In May 2008 we started our trip through Northern Romania and Southern Ukraine in Cluj-Napoca, where we stayed two nights. The multicultural town has more than 300.000 inhabitants and is known as Klausenburg to the Germans and Kolozsvar to the Hungarians.
The historic town centre is home to several churches of different denominations, with the Roman-Catholic Saint Michael Church and the Orthodox Cathedral being the dominant ones.
Due to its location on important trade routes, Cluj-Napoca nowadays attracts again businesses from all over Europe. Not only the largest university of Romania can be found here, but also quite a few other state and private educational institutions.
“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realise they were the big things.” --- Robert Brault ---

Dabs Tue Oct 20, 2009 17:05 UTC I lived on pizza and pork cutlets, couldn't stand sarmale-blech! Looks like you did the same ;-) We missed this town, thanks for the look! | german_eagle Sun Sep 27, 2009 18:03 UTC How could I miss this excellent page? Very good tips as usual. I use the guide books of both publishers as well - they're perfect. Fellner & Helmer again ... they've worked everywhere in the k.u.k. Monarchy, eh? | Bwana_Brown Sun Sep 20, 2009 22:09 UTC Holger, I really like the architectural style of the Orthodox Cathedral and it looks like you did quite well in the restaurant department too! Speaking of which, your beer tips just reminded me to open a Heineken! Well done. | Ina22Marina Sat Sep 12, 2009 22:34 UTC Every time I read a street name, my heart skipped a beat - I lived in Cluj the best of my student years! :-) Btw, for a few of them, in front of MattiusRex there's an enormous arceological site - they couldn't decide whether to keep on digging or cover it |
