I explored the south of Finland and the Baltic States in July 2002. I spent 3 days of this trip in Riga, the capital of Latvia (population: 790.000).
Riga has more of a big city atmosphere than any other baltic town. It is divided by the river Daugava and offers a nice historic old quarter with many ancient buildings between the Dome Cathedral and the St. Peters Church. The influence of the fomer Soviet Union is still visible at a few places (e.g. Academy of Science building).
Last but not least several Art Nouveau buildings all around the town and the bustling Central Market are other sights well worth seeing.

Very interesting page Holger. We've often thought about visiting Riga but not yet actually made it there! I like the 3 Brothers building and House of Blackheads, and even more so the Convent's Yard :-) But no beer or food??? LOL | pure1942 Wed Feb 25, 2009 22:12 UTC

Would love to visit some of the Baltic countries one day and Riga sure looks like a great town to see. I really liked the architecture of the House of Blackheads. |
