"Budapest - Pearl of the Danube" Budapest by HORSCHECK

I was three times in Budapest (June 2003, October 2004 and May 2008) The central European metropolis is located at the river Danube and has about 1.8 Mio inhabitants. It consists of the hilly Buda on the western bank and the flat Pest on the eastern bank of the river. The city is divided into 23 districts (Roman numerals in the address).
The most famous sights are the Chain Bridge (Lanchid), the Buda Castle and the Parliament Building. The hills of Buda, many parks and the Margaret Island in the Danube are a nice contrast to the busy city life.
VT highlights of the 2003 trip were an international VT meeting and a few dinner pre-meetings with members from Ukraine, Croatia, Hungary and Germany. See my travelogue "VT Meeting - Sunday, June 22nd 2003" for more details.
On my 2004 trip I mainly enjoyed the tasty Hungarian cuisine and beer with two of my friends.
In 2008 we finished our trip through Romania and Ukraine in Budapest from where I flew home.
"The use of travelling is to regulate imagination by reality."
--- Samuel Johnson ---
- Pros:Amazing mixture of the hilly Buda and the flat Pest.
- Cons:Tourist prices and traps in the tourist areas.
- In a nutshell:The hungarian pearl of the Danube.

Lovely page Holger! I can see by your photo how beautiful the city is at night.
One of those places we have been meaning to visit for ages but never got round to for several reasons. Thanks for the virtual tour to keep me going till we do make it here ;-) I especially liked your favourites tips and the markets, also those lovely buildings like the Savings Bank. A shame though that your lovely picture o fthe Chain Bridge at night here is almost hidden by that white strip!
Hello Holger, Thank you for visiting my page on Budapest. I kept it short, feeling a bit lazy for writing more (my Latin character!).
Lots of lovely attractions in Budapest which will be our next travel destination, hopefully this summer. Will definitely read your pages again before we go there. In fact we just came back last month from Vienna which is not far from Budapest. ~ho & pang
Ruszwurm cakes rocks & better than Gerbeaud in my opinion ...& as recommended by a few fellow VTers
Great new photos here :)
Me again, just checking out your "latest" updates since November 2004. Are you coming to Frankfurt next week for Luminale, by any chance?
Thanks Holger for the perfect page! I was once in Budapest on my way from airport to a hotel at Balaton through the central railway station. So I remember only a bridge across Danube and a beautiful view from it. Time to revisit!
Excellent tips, Holger! I loved the panoramic views from Fishermen's Bastion. We had the same problem as you trying to find restaurants open on a Sunday - everywhere seemed closed! Best wishes, Jonathan.
Very very useful Info about Budapest! Planning to go next spring! Useful tips to take into account. Thank You! ;-)
