James Joyce Irish Pub - Prague

James Joyce Irish Pub

Irish Pubs and Bars

Prague has a couple of Irish Pubs and Bars, as well as English Pubs. On my first trip to Prague in September 2003 I visited a few of them and they were perfect places to enjoy a pint of beer and to meet other travellers in a cosy atmosphere. One of my favourite Irish Pubs in Prague is called James Joyce.

Address: James Joyce Irish Pub, Liliova 10, Prague 1

Directions: The James Joyce Irish Pub is located very centrally in a side street just between the Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square. The nearest metro station is Staromestska (line A).

Inside Jelinkova Plzenska Pivnice - Prague

Inside Jelinkova Plzenska Pivnice

Jelinkova Plzenska Pivnice

I got here with a group of Czech locals whom I met in the U Zlateho Tygra beer pub. They were on a sort of pub crawling tour and Jelinkova Plzenska Pivnice was their last stop this evening.

Locals call this place just "U Jelinku", which means something like "At Jelineks'" referring to the owner of the place. It is a typical traditional pub, which exists since 1918. Only Pilsner Urquell 12° is on tap and many people drink their beer standing at the bar area. There is also one room with wooden tables, where some simple beer snacks can be ordered. In December 2015 a beer cost 40 CZK.

Opening times are Mondays to Fridays from 10:00 h to 22:00 h, whereas on Saturdays and Sundays it already closes at 18:00 h.

Directions:
Jelinkova Plzenska Pivnice can be found in Prague's Nove Mesto district just between the metro stops Narodni Trida and Mustek (line B).

Address: Jelinkova Plzenska Pivnice, Charvatova 33/1, 110 00 Prague 1

U Zlateho Tygra - Prague

U Zlateho Tygra

U Zlateho Tygra

U Zlateho Tygra (The Golden Tiger) is a traditional Czech beer pub. It was the favourite place of Bohumil Hrabal, who was one of Prague's most famous writers. The interior of the pub is equipped with old wooden furniture.

On tap is the famous Pilsner Urquell. A selection of typical cold and warm meals is on offer as well. In 2003 I came here with two other German travellers and enjoyed quite a few beers.

Interesting enough, on my second trip to the Czech Republic in December 2014 two local people in Olomouc and in Brno recommended me U Zlateho Tygra as their favourite place in Prague. So on my third visit of the Czech capital in December 2015 I returned for another visit of U Zlateho Tygra.

I arrived at around 18:00 h and the place was already very crowded, but I was lucky and could sit down at one the big tables. Here I even got in contact with some other German travellers and with a group of Czech people who were on a sort of pub crawling tour.

I ordered the roast pork neck with mustard and horseradish (80 CZK) and washed it down with two beers (40 CZK each). The meal was yummy and surprisingly cheap.

Just be prepared that smoking is allowed in the beer pub, but this probably adds to the authentic atmosphere of U Zlateho Tygra.

Directions:
U Zlateho Tygra is located very centrally in a side street between the Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square. Especially at night the outside of the building is relatively non-descript, as there is no illumination of the name or something like this. The nearest metro stop is Staromestska (line A).

Address: U Zlateho Tygra, Husova ul. 17, Prague 1
