St. Mark's Church (Crkva sv. Marka) is well known for its multicouloured coats of arms on the roof. They represent Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia. The 14th century church had to be reconstructed various times, so that not much is left from the original building.

The wide Austro-Hungarian styled Jelacic Square (Trg Bana Jelacica) is the busy heart of Zagreb. It is the place where I went first to feel the big city atmosphere. In the middle of the square a monumental horse statue can be found. The surrounding buildings represent several architectural styles (Classicism, Secession, Modernism). Directions:The Jelacic Square is located in the centre of Zagreb just between the Upper and the Lower Town.

The medieval Lotrscak Tower was built in the 13th century to protect the city gates. For more than a hundred years a cannon was fired from the tower, giving the citizens of Zagreb the chance to check their watches. There are still rumours that Croatians are always 3-5 minutes late .... :o)

Directions: The Lotrscak Tower is located in the Upper Town at the beginning of the Strossmayer Promenade. Both the Tower and the Strossmeyer Promenade offer maginficient views of the Lower Town.

Zagreb's main landmark is the Cathedral of the Assumption. The original church was badly damaged by sieges of the Tartars and by an earthquake. The two impressive bell towers (104 and105 m) were erected in Neo-Gothic style at the beginnig of the 20 th century. Unfortunately, nowadays the cathedral seems to be under permanent reconstruction.

Directions: The Cathedral of the Assumption dominates the Upper Town of Zagreb. It is part of the Old Town Kaptol.
