Things To Do: Vaduz Castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vaduz Castle (Schloss Vaduz) is the main landmark in Liechtenstein's capital. It was built as a kind of fortress in the 12th century. Extensive renovations took place at the beginning of the 19th century.

Since 1938 it is the official residence of the Princely Family and therefore it is not accessible to the public. A popular vantagepoint called "Känzeli" can be found just north of the castle.

    Directions:
The Castle overlooks the town from an adjacent hilltop, just east of the city centre.

Things To Do: St. Florin's Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • The St. Florin's Cathedral is situated on the site of a medieval chapel. It was built in Neo Gothic style in the late 19th century by the Viennese architect Friedrich von Schmidt who also designed the City Hall of Vienna.

Vaduz became an independent parish after the consecration of the then church.

    Directions:
The St. Florin's Cathedral is located in the St. Florinsgasse at the southern end of Vaduz town centre.

Things To Do: The Red House
  • Tip Rating:
  • The ancient Red House, former "Vaistlihof" is one of the oldest buildings in Vaduz dating back to the 15th century. It consists of a gabled structure with a timber framed tower, which was added in the early 19th century.

The grounds of the house were home to the royal vineyards and therefore an old wine press from the 17th century can still be seen here.

    Directions:
The Red House is situated north of the city centre, on the Prince Franz Josef street which is leading up to the castle.

    Things To Do: Town Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Town Hall was built in 1932/33 according to plans of Franz Roeckle (Frankfurt/Vaduz). The south facade has colourful ornaments around the windows and a balcony fresco which was created by Johannes Troyer.

On the front of the building the coat of arms of Vaduz can be seen. It exists like this since the 26th of July 1978.

    Directions:
The Town Hall is located in the pedestrianised part of the Städtle street, right in the heart of the town centre.

Things To Do: Rheinberger Birth House
  • Tip Rating:
  • The composer Josef Rheinberger was born on the 17th March 1839 in Vaduz. His birth house has a nice little sundial on the southern facade. In front of the building a bust of the composer can be found.

In 1851 he entered the Munich Conservatorium and wrote a large number of works. He died on the 25th November 1901 in Munich.

    Directions:
The Rheinberger Birth House is located in the town centre of Vaduz, just north of the St. Florin's Cathedral.

    Things To Do: Middle town
  • Tip Rating:
  • The original centre of Vaduz was the middle town (Mitteldorf). Like in the upper town (Oberdorf) you find many historically protected buildings here.

There is even a little square with a fountain. The middle town is surrounded by many wine yards, therefore wine growing was probably the main income for the people who lived here.

    Directions:
The middle town of Vaduz is located inbetween the Red House (Upper town) and the current town centre.
