In February 2007 a friend took me to a Rugby game of the 6 nations championships. England was facing Italy at Twickenham Stadium which is also called "The home of England Rugby". England won the game in the sold out stadium with 20:7. Twickenham Stadium was inaugurated in 1909 by the Rugby Football Union. At that time it had a capacity of 20.000 people both seating and standing. After various extensive rebuildings the capacity has now increased to 82.000. The stadium is also home to the Museum of Rugby. Directions:Twickenham Stadium is situated in the Twickenham district of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The nearest tube station is Richmond (District line) and the nearest railway station is Twickenham, which is served from London Waterloo. Sports Travel: The (new) Wembley Stadium

For every football and sports fan the Wembley Stadium is among the most famous stadiums in the world. I had the pleasure to attend a concert of U2 in the sold out stadium in 1997. Unfortunately, the old Wembley Stadium which was completed on 23 April 1923 was demolished at the beginning of 2003. In December 2004 I took the chance to have a look at the New Wembley construction site. It is dominated by a 133 metre tall arch which supports the roof structure. The New Wembley Stadium should be inaugurated in early 2007.

When visiting London at the end of June, you should take the chance to visit the famous Wimbledon tennis championships. A certain number of tickets is available daily at the turnstiles and for every person who finally leaves for the day another person is admitted. So almost everyone gets the chance to enter the grounds after a long wait in one of the two queues what can be great fun. Especially in the first week it is worth it, because plenty of matches take place on the grounds until the late evening.

London is home to many football clubs playing in the various leagues from Premier down to Third League. The most famous clubs in the Premier League are Arsenal London, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea FC, Fulham FC, West Ham United and Charlton Athletic FC. Other popular clubs are Crystal Palace, Watford FC and Queens Park Rangers. In the early 1990's I attended a match of Arsenal London in the famous Highbury Park.
