Trains: To London by train

Getting TO/AROUND: London has several major mainline train stations, each serving different parts of the UK. They form a ring around the city centre and many of them are connected by the Circle Line of the London Underground.

Since November 2007 London's newly redeveloped St Pancras International Station is the terminus of the Eurostar in London.

From there it serves routes to continental Europe through the Channel Tunnel to Lille, Paris and Brusseles.

Getting TO/AROUND: I flew many times to and from London Heathrow, which is Europe's busiest and largest airport.
It is located about 24 km west of the city centre and therefore still within reach of the undeground The Tube, Piccadilly line). A quicker way to get to town is the Heathrow Express to/from Paddington Station (15 mins).
Apart from that the airport is served by many buses from several destinations in the city and other places all over England.
Nowadays the security checks in London Heathrow are very thorough, therefore make sure you arrive early enough.

Getting TO/AROUND: Gatwick is the UK's second busiest airport and situated about 45 km south of London.

Probably the most convenient and fastest way to get from Gatwick to London city centre is by Gatwick Express. The modern train takes just 30 minutes from the airport to London Victoria. It runs every 15 minutes and tickets even can be purchased on the train at no extra cost.

A much cheaper option to get to the heart of London are local trains. First Capital Connect runs direct services to e.g. London Bridge or St. Pancras International.

Getting TO/AROUND: Stansted is London's third international airport and well known as a hub for the low cost airlines Ryanair and easyjet. The airport is located about 48 km north-east of London and can be reached in about 45 minutes with the Stansted Express from Liverpool Street station.
Other options to get to the airport include local trains and coach services.

Getting TO/AROUND: London City Airport is located in the Royal Docks area of London, only 10 km east from the City of London. It is mainly served by business flights.
The airport has its own Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station just next to the Terminal. Apart from that it is served by the local buses #473 and #474. The mainline station Silvertown is only a 5 minutes walk away.

Getting TO/AROUND: Not only London's but also Great Britain's largest coach station is Victoria Coach Station. It is served by coaches and buses from all major towns in England, Ireland and continental Europe.

The Coach Station is situated in the heart of London's City Centre, just next to Victoria train station (Tube: Victoria). The terminals for arrivals and departures are located on the opposite sides of Elizabeth Street.

Among the companies serving Victoria Coach Station are: National Express, Eurolines and Megabus.

Getting TO/AROUND: The quickest way of getting around in London is by underground, usually known as the tube.

The 12 lines are colour-coded and operate between 05:00 h and shortly after midnight.

The undergound network is divided into 6 zones and fares depend on how many zones your trip crosses.

Tickets are available from the tube stations, ticket machines and selected newsagents. Cash fares are usually more expensive than paying by the new electonic Oyster card, which is a rechargable smartcard for electronic ticketing.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you aren't in a hurry, the red doubledecker buses are a cheap and funny way to explore the city.
Normally you pay the driver on entering, but especially the routes through the centre are served by older buses with an open rear platform (Routemaster) and a conductor who sells the tickets.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you feel lost in London take one of the famous black cabs at any time of the day or night. It is a unique and convenient way of getting form here to there. You can hail them on the street or from special Taxi ranks.

Good updates Holger! South Ealing is my local station and has a unique feature among all tube stations - do you know what that is?

London is also one of my favourite cities in the world! I really enjoyed reading of your latest VT meetings there but also your Sports tips - since I love football and rugby! My wife's parents used to live beside Gatwick, so I'm familiar with the area.

Enjoyed the London updates, was just there in January myself and am going back in August :-)
