  • Favorite Thing: "Switched on London" is a new Lighting Festival which takes place for over a week at the beginning of February in the Pool of London.

For the first time it took place in 2007 and annual repetitions are planned. During the event various sights in the area are temporaily illuminated in artistic and exciting ways. Among other landmarks the Tower of London, HMS Belfast, London Bridge, City Hall and the Design Museum were involved in the event in 2007.

In both February 2007 and 2008 I visited some of the illuminations with a lovely bunch of VT members and we really enjoyed a walk along the banks of the river Thames in between Tower Bridge and London Bridge (Pool of London).

Please check the following website for more info about the event:

  • Piccadilly Circus by night

  • Favorite Thing: Many buildings and sights are beautifully illuminated at night in London. Especially around christmas, the squares and shopping streets of the city centre are equipped with lit up decorations. Among the most popular places at night all year round is Piccadilly Circus with its neon light advertisements.

  • Favorite Thing: The south bank of the river Thames between Waterloo Bridge and Tower Bridge has got a pedestrianised pavement and leads along many interesting sights. It is a nice walk which offers scenic views of the opposite side.

Among the many sights in this area are the London Eye, the Royal National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Tate Modern Museum, the Millenium Footbridge, Southwark Cathedral, Hays Galleria, the HMS Belfast and the new City Hall.

    General Tips: Around Piccadilly Circus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Stroll around the busy area around Piccadilly Circus with the aluminium statue known as Eros. It is formed by the junction of five streets including the popular shopping street Regent Street. At night the famous neon advertisments give the place a touch of dazzle. Just amazing ....

    General Tips: London Markets
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Stroll around one of the popular street markets of London. Camden Market (Tube: Camden) is a young place selling nearly everything. Antiques can be bought at Portobello Road Market (Tube: Notting Hill Gate). A small market for jewelry and ethnic stuff is Gabriel´s Wharf on the South Bank (Tube: Southwark). Most markets are opened only on weekends.

  • Favorite Thing: Hop on one of the red doubledecker buses which pass through Oxford Street. Try to get a seat at the front window of the upper level and enjoy the busy city life as a mixture of people, buses and black cabs.

Sounds and looks wonderful! We will be in London in June!

Good updates Holger! South Ealing is my local station and has a unique feature among all tube stations - do you know what that is?

London is also one of my favourite cities in the world! I really enjoyed reading of your latest VT meetings there but also your Sports tips - since I love football and rugby! My wife's parents used to live beside Gatwick, so I'm familiar with the area.

Enjoyed the London updates, was just there in January myself and am going back in August :-)
