In September 2001 I spent a few days in Sligo and the surrounding area. Sligo is the largest town in the northwest of Ireland (population 17.000). It is famous for the poet W. B. Yeats and has many old buildings like the ruins of Sligo Abbey which was founded in 1253.
Sligo has many little shops, pubs and restaurants, because it is the starting point for daytrips to the beautiful County Sligo. The cliff-rimmed Benbulben mountain or the sandy beaches of Rosses Point are nearby.

W. B. Yeats, we had to read works from him in school, but I did not like it ! ;-)
Hm, my only memory of Sligo is that the Youth Hostel I had wanted to stay at had just burned down so that I had to stay at a B&B - it was very nice, but at 60 Euros much more expensive than those you recommend...

What a nice sounding place, The Abbey, Cathedral & mountains, all that I would like to see! Agree with you about B&B's, I like them too, and have met wonderfully nice & helpful people this way.
We spent some of our honeymoon in Ireland - in January ???years ago. Sligo was one of my favouriute places.
Nice Page Holger. Ive lately been touring Ireland and am want to set aside some time for Sligo/Donegal. Visited many years ago as a child but don't remember much. Love your tips on Tony Hawks and Pete McCarthy's Books. They are a good read.
