Lisbon - City of bridges, old trams and fado

by HORSCHECK - last update: Jun 14, 2009

Lisbon tram #15 at Praca da Figueira

When the idea of holding the "2nd official European VT meeting" in Marbella (Spain) in May 2006 came up I started to think about how to combine it with a great trip. My choice finally came down to Lisbon. Lisbon was one of the few Western European capitals I had yet to visit

Lisbon has about 570.000 inhabitants. Due to its location on seven low hills at the river Tejo it is in my opinion one of Europe's most attractive capitals. Many viewpoints are located throughout the city and offer terrific photo opportunities. Among the variety of interesting sights and historical buildings, one of the unique things to do in Lisbon is a ride on one of the old yellow trams through the ancient Alfama district.

Outside of the city centre the Park of Nations and the Vasco da Gama village of Belem are within reach of public transportation and well worth a visit.

During my 6 days in Lisbon I met two of my Portuguese VT friends for dinner meetings. I learned a lot about their city, local customs and of course the tasty Portuguese cuisine.

"I met a lot of people in Europe. I even encountered myself."

Pros:"Gorgeous bridges, old trams, interesting sights and laid-back lifestyle."
Cons:"Lisbon can be very hot in summer."
In A Nutshell:"City of 7 hills (7 colinas)."
