On our way to the 5th VT Euromeet in Cascais, we also visited Nazare for a few days just before we headed off to Lisbon.
Nazare has about 15.000 inhabitants and is located on Portugal's west coast halfway between Coimbra and Lisbon. With its long sandy beach Nazare has become a popular seaside resort, but still it has kept a bit of the charm of a traditional Portuguese fishing village.
Among the highlights is a visit of Nazare's clifftop district of Sitio from where magnificient views of the town and the beach can be enjoyed. It is also home to the Baroque Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazare, whose history dates back to the 14th century.
“The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach”
--- Henry Beston ---
- Pros:Quaint historic city centre; panoramic views from Sitio.
- Cons:Crowded with tourists in the summer.
- In a nutshell:Portugal's quaint and booming seaside resort.

Hello, Holger! ~ It's great to read your interesting pages and see your amazing photos...Thanks!~
...restaurant tips has made me hungry! :-)
What a grand group of tips. Such a great place to stay and at such a wonderful price. Your photographs are always excellent. The restaurant tips were varied, precise, and tantalizing. This lovely place is my kind of place to visit.
Fantastic views in Praia do Norte and Nau dos Corvos, Holger! Yummy restaursnts tips. Portugal is also in my wish list. All the best from frosty Moscow (is it spring? haha!)
Holger, it looks like you made a fantastic find in pretty little Nazaré! Loved your restaurant and hotel tips. Glad to see that you managed to see Peniche too - my wife and I spent a night there while visiting the amazing Berlenga Islands in 2004!
I enjoyed reading about your pre-Euromeet trip. The hotel sounds great for the money and Peniche seems a lovely day trip - I love cliffs and a wilder coastline like that! Yummy food too ;-)
Enjoyed re-visiting Nazaré through your page, it's been some time since I last visited.
The day trip to Peniche would probably my favourite activity here. Amazing rock formations! Remind me not to watch restaurant tips at that time of day - getting hungry right away, LOL!
