Akerhus Fortress (Akerhus Festning) was used to protect Oslo from sea attacks. Some of the medieval buildings date back to the 13th century.

Around 1697 parts of the fortress were rebuilt into a renaissance castle. Its location on a small hill offers panoramic views of Oslo's harbour and Aker Brygge.

Directions:
The Akerhus Fortress is situated in the harbour of Oslo, just east of the Town Hall. The trams #10 and #12 stop at "Christiania Torv", which is the nearest tram stop for Akerhus Fortress.

The baroque cathedral of Oslo (Domkirke) was consecrated in 1697 and renovated in the middle of the 19th century. The area around the cathedral with its inner courtyard is a nice place for a rest in Oslo's busy city centre.

The Holmenkollen is located about 371 m above sea level. It is home of the worlds most famous ski jump tower (56 m) which offers fantastic views of Oslo and the Fjord.

Aprt from that it gives you a good impression of the view of the ski jumpers during a competition. Just make sure that you are not scared of heights.

Finally the complex houses a ski museum that covers all kind of ski related exhibitions.

The Holmenkollen can be reached within 40 mins by public transport from the city centre. The nearest metro stop is "Holmenkollen".

The Royal Palace (Det Kongelige Slott) was build in classicsm style and completed in 1848. The Palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens. A statue of King Karl Johan sitting on a horse is placed on the grounds.

Oslo's National Theatre (Nationaltheatret) opened in 1899 and is a nice example of Norwegian architecture.

The building is surrounded by statues of famous authors and actors. The theatre shows mainly Norwegian plays, but also classic and modern works.

The National Theatre is located at Stortingsgate 15, and can also be reached from Karl Johans Gate. The nearest metro stop is "Nationaltheatret".

Aker Brygge Aker Brygge Review

Aker Brygge is one of the newer parts of Oslo. It was built on the grounds of the old shipyards. The area is packed with shops, theatres, cinemas and many restaurants and cafes at the harbour front.

Especially on hot sunny summer evenings the cafes and restaurants are crowded with locals and tourists, who like to enjoy Oslo's expensive beer.

In 2002 an Eternal Peace Flame was installed at the so called Pier of Honor of Aker Brygge
