The Torre Guinigi is one of the two towers that can be climbed to get stunning views of Lucca and the surrounding Apuane Alps. In the 15th century the tower was added to the Palazzo Guinigi, which was home of one of Lucca's most important families. The tower is unique for the oaks that grow on top of it.

Directions: The Torre Guinigi can't be missed because of its oaks on top. It is located in Via. S. Andrea.

Besides the Torre Guinigi, the Torre delle Ore is the second tower in Lucca which offers scenic views of the city. Since the Middle Ages it is equipped with a big clock. The present clockwork is swiss, but surprisingly the clock was about 2 minutes slow when I was there. But that's just Italy ... :o)

Directions: The Torre delle Ore is situated right in the centre of the Old Town in the busy shopping street Via Fillungo.

The Romanesque Duomo di San Martino was built in the 13th century, whereas the attached bell tower (campanile) exists since the 11th century. It is home of the Volto Santo (Holy Face), a carving of Jesus created by Nicodemus who attended the crucifixion. On the outside near the entrance a circular labyrinth is carved in the stone wall.

This famous church was built between the 11th and 14th century. The columns in the facade are all different and the wings of the angle on top of the facade are flexible to survive the winds. The church itsself is smaller than the facade because there wasn't enough money left to raise it as high as the facade.

The oval Piazza Anfiteatro used to be a Roman amphitheater. During medieval times, houses were built on the Roman remains; later from 1830 the area was used as a marketplace. Nowadays it is a nice meeting point for both locals and tourists.

The City Wall of Lucca has 6 gates which are well worth seeing, because of the different architectural styles. Porta San Pietro was erected in 1566 and is located in the south. If you go clockwise from here you will see Porta Sant Anna, Porta San Donato (1629), Porta Santa Maria (1593), Porta San Jacopo and Porta Elisa (1804). Porta Sant Anna and Porta San Jacopo were added much later than the other gates.

Directions: The City Wall with the 6 gates can be found just around the compact Old Town of Lucca.
