Venetian gondola - Venice

Venetian gondola

Explore Venice by gondola Gondola Review

The most famous vehicle of Venice seems to be the black gondola. The opinions about the gondola vary between tourist trap and most romantic way to explore the city.

The gondola is navigated by a standing gondolieri who often wears a striped shirt and a hat. The cost of a 45 min ride is about 65 Euro for up to 6 people. The rates are controlled by the government. Nevertheless, the price can be negotiated with the gondolieri, who will tell you about the city while rowing.

Ljubljana to Venice train in Venice - Venice

Ljubljana to Venice train in Venice

To Venice by train By train (Santa Lucia station) Review

In August 2004 I went to Venice by train from Ljubljana (Slovenia), whereas in May 2005 I arrived in Venice by train from Verona.

The central train station Santa Lucia is located in the district Cannaregio, just at one end of the Canale Grande.

Several vaporetti lines stop just in front of the train station (Ferrrovia).

Marco Polo Airport - Venice

Marco Polo Airport

To Venice by plane By plane (and then into Venice) Review

In May 2005 I left Italy by plane from the Venice Airport Marco Polo, which is located about 12 km east of the city centre.

The Airport is very modern and consists of 2 terminals. It can be reached by both local buses, Express Fly buses, waterboats and taxis.

For more details about how to get to the Airport, please read my "To Venice Airport by public transportation" tip.

Vaporetto on the Canale Grande - Venice

Vaporetto on the Canale Grande

Explore Venice by vaporetto Vaporetto Review

The public transportation in the city centre of Venice consists of vaporetti (water buses).

The most famous line is #1 which serves a route along the Canale Grande.

In 2004 a single ticket was 3,50 EURO (excluding a trip on the Canale Grande), whereas a 24 hour card was 10,50 EURO.

Tickets can be bought from the ticket booths at the landing stations. They have to be stamped before boarding a vaporetto.

ACTV bus no. 5 - Venice

ACTV bus no. 5

To Venice Airport by public transportation By plane (and then into Venice) Review

There are three options to travel between the city centre of Venice and the Airport Marco Polo:

The most stylish option is probably by waterboat service which is provided by the private transportation company Alilaguna. A trip from the Airport to St Mark's Square takes about 70 mins and costs 10 Euro.

Special Express buses which are operated by ATVO take you for 3 Euro in 20 mins directly from the Airport to Piazzale Roma.

The local buses no. 5 of the ACTV company take you also in 20 mins to Piazzale Roma. The advantage of these buses is that you can use the tickets (e.g. 24 hour ticket) also on the vaporetti which belong to the same company. A single ticket is only 2 Euro.

Signposts in Venice - Venice

Signposts in Venice

Explore Venice on foot Walking (incl. city maps) Review

The city centre of Venice is small enough to be best explored on foot. But make sure to have a proper map or at least keep an eye on the plenty of signposts directing you to the main spots, like Rialto, San Marco or Ferrovia.
