I was twice in Venice. The first time was in August 2004 when I travelled from Croatia via Slovenia to Italy.
On this trip I arrived in Venice after a 4 hours train trip from Ljubljana. On the train I sat at a 4-seater with 2 American and an English traveller. The interesting thing was, that we all were planning to only make a short stopover in Venice on our trips: The Americans on their way to Bologna, the English on his way home after 4 weeks in East and Central Europe and me on my way to Lucca.
The second time was after the 1st European VT Meeting which took place in Valeggio sul Mincio near Verona. On this trip I left Italy to Germany from Venice by plane, so I decided to stay two days in Venice to mainly explore the islands in the lagoon of Venice.
It seems like travellers either love or hate Venice. To be honest, I haven't decided yet, but I can say it is definitely a must-see place in Europe. I always enjoyed a nice time in this fascinating city, but I also perceived the uncountable tourist rip-offs between Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge.

I would love to go back to Venice one day to explore those small alleys & waterways some more and see the islands - also the Rialto Market which we must have missed. Not sure we'll bother with the pubs though - plenty of them here! | Fam.Rauca Thu Apr 23, 2009 08:00 UTC Hi Holger! Your Venice page is very interesting and the pictures are superb.
