"Charleston, South Carolina" Skinke's Profile

Introduction

I am new to this so please be patient. Rather than start off with travels in Europe that I have enjoyed so much, I will begin with my hometown of Charleston South Carolina. Perhaps by starting with somewhere that I have some knowledge about I will gain the confidence to build a decent European page in the future. Anyway please come on down and take a step back to the 19th century or the 18th or even the 17th. Yes we are a very old city, as South Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies.

A good way to see the city on foot

Charleston is very fortunate to have a man named Philip Simmons make his home there. Blacksmith by trade and artist his work is world famous. Examples can be seen at the Smithsonian and the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia. A good way to take a walking tour of historic Charleston is to seek out his work. You can purchase the book "Charleston Blacksmith, The Work of Philip Simmons" and on page 106 there is a map of the city showing where his works are located

Charleston Tea Plantation

Newly opened to the public, the Charleston Tea Plantation is the only tea farm in North America. A fascinating look at how tea is grown and brought to market awaits the visitor to this off the beaten path point of interest located about 10 miles outside of Charleston on Wadmalaw Island. Take Maybank Highway from James Island and it will be about 10 miles on the left. Watch for the sign. Visitors can view the manufacturing process through large windows while watching a series of informative videos detailing the history and processing of Tea. The most charming and friendly staff are the real highlight and a gift shop with free Iced samples is not to be missed. The grounds themselves are beautiful and horses wander free everywhere. As long as you are out this way I recommend taking the road till it ends. Rockville SC is my favorite small community in SC and well worth a visit. Buyer beware, if you think these properties are a bargain check the price tags!!!
