In 1210, two years before his death, the king D. Sancho I recognized Alcobaça, as other places like Aljubarrota and Alvorninha. The city of Alcobaça is situated in the valeys of the rivers Alcoa and Baça (Alcoa + Baça = Alcobaça), surrounded by hills. It's 100Km far from Lisboa, 30Km far from Leiria, 12Km far from Nazaré and 25Km far from Caldas da Rainha. The povoation started growing in the area around the monastery in the century XIII. |
