Sintra is a delightful historic hillside town surrounded by stunning natural beauty, a world away from the built-up Estoril coast - even its climate is cooler and wetter. It comprises three distinct districts: Sintra - Vila Velha, the characterful old quarter built around the distinctive National Palace; Estefânia, the main commercial centre; and the pleasant village of São Pedro, boasting plenty of local atmosphere. A one-time summer retreat of Portuguese royalty, the town's aristocratic past is reflected in its splendid manor houses and elaborate palaces which - together with the verdant surroundings and beautiful views - have earned it World Heritage status by UNESCO. It is busy throughout the year - particularly in the height of summer - but still manages to retain a low-key, leisurely atmosphere. |
