  • The Reichenbach tower dates back to 1376. It was connected to the Kaisertrutz until 1848 by two walls. On the tower walls you can see in the upper row six flags. These are the countries Goerlitz belonged to over the time.

  • This Jugendstil department store was built in 1912/13 after the plans of Potsdam architect Carl Schmanns. Today, the Hertie department store has taken over from Karstadt. On the ground floor you find a section with travel books of the local area and postcards. There is a pay toilet on an upper floor which is cleaned after each use.

  • The construction of this imposing building was started in 1490. The wooden upper section was only replaced by stone in 1848-1850. The wall are up to 4 meters and 70 centimeters thick. In the 30 years war the Swedes were holed up in the Kaisertrutz against the army of the Kaiser.

  • The protestant Frauenkirche goes back to 1449-86 and is of late Gothic style. The western portal is rich in decoration. The West tower got a Baroque top in 1735. The organ is like a swallow's nest.

  • The Dreifaltigkeitskirche is a former Franziscan monastery church which was founded in 1234. The interior must be amazing, so make sure you visit the church before 4 pm. When we finally decided to visit it was already closed. BTW, you are not allowed to take pictures inside.

  • When you see the Neptun fountain then you have also found the tourist office nearby. But mind you there are two shops. The first one that looks like a tourist office is actually a private one called I-Vent. This is where I bought a map before I saw that the actual tourist office is next door.

The Neptun fountain dates back to 1756.

  • If you arrive by train, make sure you take a look at the fantastic Jugendstil hall in the railway station. It was built from 1845-47 and used to have 12 tracks running. Today they use only 6 tracks. When they built the station there were fields around it. On 15th October 1846 the town was finally connected by train.

  • On this spot used to be the oldest church of the city. The Nikolaikirche was built from 1452 until 1520. The interior burnt in 1717, so in 1720 a Baroque altar was added. The church was made a memorial for the Goerlitzer world war I victims in 1925.

  • You will find the Nikolai cemetery right behind the Nikolai church. A few steps away you will find the Jacob Boehme grave. A house where Jacob Boehme used to live you find over the Neisse river in Zgorzelec in Poland.

The cemetery was first mentioned in 1305 and is apparently one of the most beautiful ones in Germany.

There IS a Jewish community! Small, but interesting, and they're working on a renovation of the synagogue. It's called "Jüdische Gemeinde Görlitz" - very helpful! Alex Jacobowitz

Looks like a lovely place! Only passed through on my way to Wroclaw. Should visit next time, especially since one of my ancestors had the last name "Görlitz" (Gerlitz in Polish spelling)! :-)

Great looking Jugendstil railway station! But it's too bad they only use six tracks out of the original twelve. Thanks for including a tip on the bicycle paths and signs.

Very good page, Sonja. Enjoyed your comments on Görlitz. Yup, Silesian Bratwurst is a bit different, lol.
