Spieker by day - Herscheid

Spieker by day

Spieker (local lore museum)

The Spieker is about 300 years old. It was originally used for storage i.e. the natural products that the church received were stored here. It is probably from the 17th century but in today's form from around 1800.

The Spieker is actually the local lore museum. Since its opening times are very rare and short, I only managed to visit on 27th November 2011 for the first time.

I was impressed with how much love this place has been furnished and is looked after. Local people donated lots of the exhibits. There was no entry fee but there is a donation box and a visitor's book.

The building is full of rooms of various sizes features various themes like school, clothes and costumes, furniture, kitchen, pantry etc. What impressed me most were the plexiglass panels through which you could view the inside of the walls. That way one gets a good idea how a half-timbered house is set up.

When I visited they had a special exhibition of a nativity set and old Christmas tree holders.

The building also houses the town's special room where you can get married in. But you can only bring a small wedding party as it is very small.

Märkische Museumseisenbahn - Herscheid

Märkische Museumseisenbahn

Take a ride on the museum railway

In nearby Hüinghausen there is a museum railway run by a club. From May till early December they have regular events with train rides by either diesel or steam engine. It's well worth a visit as it's good fun for young and old. Hüinghausen belongs to Herscheid.

For more info check out my Hüinghausen page.

Forest learning path (Waldlehrpfad)

On the Nordhelle of the Ebbemountains there is this really lovely learning path. The path is rather flat and suitable for wheelchairs. Just look what I discovered...

TV tower

A short distance from the Robert-Kolb-Turm there is a modern TV tower. Unfortunately, it's off limits and only for TV reception and not for enjoying the view.

Robert-Kolb-Tower on Nordhelle - Herscheid

Robert-Kolb-Tower on Nordhelle

Robert-Kolb-Turm (tower)

A tower on the ridge of the Ebbemountain in a place called Nordhelle has first been built almost 200 years ago. The order to build a stone tower came from Napoleon who needed a mirror telegraph. For a long time there was a wooden tower but a storm was the end of that one. Today's tower was built in 1912 and was inaugurated on 21th September 1913. The current tower is 18m high. There is a café in the adjoining building.

Take a walk - Herscheid
Take a walk

I suggest you take a walk through town and discover monuments, Fachwerk buildings, lovely scenery, an Italian ice cream parlour etc. There is also a gallery and of course various cafés and restaurants.

city hall

City hall

You are not likely to have anything to do with the city hall unless you plan to move here. Nevertheless, someone in the city hall is responsible for the tourists since they publish a nice pamphlet about Herscheid in German.

Apostelkirche

The Apostelchurch is from the 11th century. It was first mentioned in 1072 when Erzbishop Anno II of Köln presented it to the Grafschaft monastery. This evangelic church was originally called St. Cyriakus (13th/14th century). The late gotic altar from the end of 15th/early 16th century was taken away in 1881 and can now be view in the castle museum of Altena. The choirchairs are from 1548.
