I first visited Meiringen and surroundings as a child. Later I went on a day tour to Grimsel to see the cristals in the mountain and on that occassion we also visited the Aareschlucht. I must have been quite fascinated by that gorge because I decided to return once more.

So, for me the reason to visit Meiringen is neither Sherlock Holmes nor skiing in winter but the gorge and of course the famous "merengues" (see local customs).

Pros and Cons

In a nutshell:Base to hiking paradise - not as touristy as Interlaken

A nice looking town. I never knew where Merengue was invented. I agree that it is always a good idea to bring an apple when you go hiking.

This seems just as we expect Switzerland to be, even down to the cow bells :-) The Aareschlucht in particular sounds worth a visit

The gorge looks amazing! And mmmm merengue! Being a sweet tooth and loving to hike, this really sounds like my kind of place! :-)

The gorge is absolutely gorgeous and I can see why you wanted to come back here Sonja. My very favourite dessert is lemon "merengue" pie.
