Old ring wall

There are some left-overs of the old ring wall from the middle ages. And just opposite the old arch there is this small slice of a building.

The In-Albon house was built in 1518 by Simon In-Albon the younger. He was also a Landeshauptmann. The house is very pretty and has a small tower over an alley.

Altes Spittel

Old Spittel

The old Spittel dates back to the 16th century when it was a house belonging to Johannes In-Albon, the Landeshauptmann. Only in 1751 it became a Spittel due to a grant from Franz Josef Burgener. In 1989 it was renovated.

Meierturm from below - Visp

Meierturm from below

Meierturm (Meier tower)

This building in the shape of a tower is the oldest still inhabitated building in Visp. It was originally called Lochmatterturm and dates back to the 12th and 13th century. In the 13th and 14th century it was inhabitated by the Meiers.

It's best if you walk around the building as it is much more impressive from below, when you can see it sitting on the rock. A big redwood tree is growing beside it.

Directions: From St. Martiniplatz keep going in direction Zermatt and take the small alley immediately after the St. Martins church to you right.

Kultur- and Kongresshouse - Visp
Kultur- and Kongresshouse

The tourist information is located in this modern building. There is also a small park sort of in front of it with free public toilets. Beware, that the tourist office has not very userfriendly opening times. Monday till Friday it's closed from 12 till 13.30 and on Saturday it only opens from 11.00 till 15.00. That's why I never made it there.

Behind this small park there is a shell of a house. I was quite surprised to see it there but then I thought that maybe it's a reminding memorial of the big floods some years back which distroyed a lot in Brig, Visp etc. The floods consisted of lots of debris and mud and was a major natural disaster.

Furrer house

The Furrer house is a typical example of a wooden Wallis chalet type house. You can find it right in the center of the old town. It dates back to 1897.

St. Martinskirche

This church is only from 1953 and the only old part left from the original church from the 17th century are the arches from 1651. The church actually consists of two churches. A lower small one and a bigger one up the stairs.

Rathaus - Visp

Rathaus

Rathaus (Townhall)

This building is not very old at all. It was only built in 1948. The fountain on the square in front of it looks of the same period.

St. Martinskirche - interior

The upper church is much bigger than the lower church. The upper church has beautiful colour stained glass windows and a big organ.
