We used Poprad as a base to the explore the High Tatry mountains which turned out an excellent option.

Poprad has a recently renovated old town square. Otherwise it´s a socialist style town without too much appeal.

Pros and Cons
  • In a nutshell:A good base to explore the mountains as day trips.

It's a good thing they renovated the old town. When we stayed there (2 weeks!) In the 1980s it looked shabby and run down. And since the newer part of town wasn't very attractive either ... Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your advice on this good place to view the Slovak Tatras by day-trip. I'm not sure we can make it here next year with a baby in tow, but it's still fun to plan! 8) Cheers, Mark

Interesting page, Sonja! Special thanks for the Red Army monument tip. Thousands Russian soldiers died for freedom of Slovakia. Let's remember their feat of arms...

Outstanding restaurant and hotel tips. What an enjoyable place Poprad seems to be. You have some fine photos to accompany your tips.

This really seem to be a good base to explore the High Tatry. Opinions might vary, but especially in low season there seem to be at least a few options for dining out in Poprad. Keep up the good work ...
