The city center lies between Neris and Nemunas rivers and mainly consists of the old and new town. It may be worth buying the Kaunas/Klaipeda In your Pocket guide booklet for 8 litas. It is very useful but it can still be challenging finding the right bus stop to go ie to the botanical garden. Another challenge is finding the way out of town by car. I got lost when trying to find the motorway to Vilnius.

Kaunas has a very different atmosphere compared to Vilnius which is more international, but it is also a charming city which once used to be the capital of the country for some time.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Lovely town, one of my favourites!
Cons:it can rain cats and dogs
In a nutshell:put it on your itinerary as a must see

If I go this place, I'll walk at the Laivses (Freedom) aleja and hopefully it's not raining cats and dogs! It is (amazingly) raining right now here in sunny Phoenix! Norman :)

Looks like a lovely town to visit and to have a VT get-together. Prices are reasonable too.

Another great page Sonja. Looks like you had better weather on your trips to Kaunas than me. It poured all day during my visit! Pizza Jazz seems to be a Lithuanian instituion! Also ate here during my trip...more to get out of the rain than for the food ;)

Hello Sonja! Excellent page on Kaunas! I was there last year and liked it very much. It was the first of May and all the museums were closed. Happy birthday from Finland!
