"Welcome to Utena" Utena by yumyum

Utena Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 24 photos

I came here with my mum as some Russian ancestors lived only a few kilometers from here in Gajzunai. Lithuanian friends of ours from Utena came with us since they spend weekends in Gajzunai in the house that used to belong to my ancestors.

Utena was first mentioned in a letter from king Mindaugas in 1261, but back then there was only a wooden castle.

One more place I have never heard about... Beautiful church of Christ's Ascension! The church of modern style is not in my taste. Thanks, Sonja for sharing!

How did it happen that your Lithuanian friends started spending weekends in the house that used to belong to your ancestors? Just a coincidence?

Utena is kinda...the most known in Lithuania due to nice lakes in that region. Seems that church and museum is worth visiting as well ;)

Lovely little page. It is interesting to see that in Lithuania even the tiniest village seems to have a Tourist Information Office.

I did not know about this museum - I have to admit that almost all I know about Utena is Utenos Alus....
