Zagreb Transportation

Getting TO/AROUND: Zagreb is a city full of blue trams. Being from Zurich I felt immediately at home as we also have blue trams. Zagreb has 15 tram lines which are easy to use. Just make sure you get yourself a tramline map from the tourist office. The latest series of trams have buttons to push in order for the doors to open unlike the older trams which open all doors at each station automatically. Trams can be very full especially around rush hour. So far stations are not announced yet, so count your stops on the map.

Currently (in 2007), a few lines are diverted as there is a major construction site on Kvaternikov Trg (Square) so lines 5, 7 and 13 running differently.

Getting TO/AROUND: There are several local bus terminals where the buses leave that stray off the beaten path. Zagreb has a good public transport system which is realiable.

Besides the local buses there are intercity buses to other cities and towns in Croatia. These leave from the "Autobusni Kolodvor". You find a tram stop by that name on tram lines 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Getting TO/AROUND: You buy your tram/bus tickets at any kiosk near a station. You can either buy a single ticket which in 2007 was 6.50 Kuna or a day card for 18 Kuna. When you enter the tram or bus you need to validate it in a little orange or yellow machine. Often there is only one such maschine. There is always one next to the front entrance near the driver. In tram trailers they are at the back. You can also buy tickets from the driver but they are more expensive there.

If you want to buy a day card you need to say "dnevna karta".

    Train: By train
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: I came to Zagreb by direct night train from Zurich. The daily train leaves Zurich at 21.40 and arrives in Zagreb the next morning at 10.52 (it also stops in Ljubljana earlier in the morning). The carriages were Croatian. I was in a coupé for 4 but there are also coupés for 6. If you book the top bunks keep in mind that they are very high up!

Back home I chose the day trains leaving Zagreb at 7.50 in the morning, changing in the Austrian town of Schwarzach-St. Veit at around 14:00 and again in Feldkirch at around 18:40 before arriving in Zurich at 20:20. This was a very long journey taking 12,5 hours but I saw some very beautiful scenery (see travelogue).

For the night journey you should ask whether there are "Sparnight" tickets available. I paid for such a savingnight CHF 77 in a couchette coupé with 4 people for one way.

    Transportation: By funicular

Getting TO/AROUND: This is a cute short ride from lower to upper town. If you have a day card you don't need to pay extra.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you want to visit Zagreb's house mountain Sljeme and don't want to walk up, then you will get the chance to ride a gondola which takes 4 people. The journey takes 23 minutes one way and the return fare in April 07 was 17 Kunas. There is a rumour that they want to build a new one and that this one will be shut down in autumn 07. So check before you head out there.

Bus/Car: How to get to Mirogoj cemetery
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: It's easy to get to the Mirogoj cemetery by bus. You need to walk to Kaptol square where you will find the bus no. 106. Lots of people will get off at the cemetery, so you can hardly miss it. On photo no. 1 you see what the bus stop sign looks like. On the second photo you find the timetable.

Transportation: How to get to the ropeway
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO

Getting TO/AROUND: Catch tram no. 8 or 14 to the end of the lines in Mihaljevac. There you change to tram no. 15 (photo no. 1) which takes you uphill. In Dolje at the end of the line 15, you keep walking slightly uphill for a couple of minutes, cross a small road and you will see a café, keep right and you will see the sign "nad tunelom" (photo no. 2). Keep walking and shortly you will see the tunnel entry (photo 3). Cross the tunnel (photo 4) and keep walking until you see some stairs to the left. Take them, cross a car park and keep going uphill on another staircase, pass the kiosk/café and enter the ropeway building (photo 5). It's about a 1,5 km walk. If by then you need a toilet, then you will find one to the right of the ropeway building, down some stairs.

Getting TO/AROUND: What can be more romantic than a ride in a horse-drawn carriage?! Anyway, you best enquire in the tourist office when and where it is possible.

Excellent 5 star tips and great pics - I was there in the 70s - Mike from that forgotten, very historic, suburb of London called "Barking Town".
