Lotrscak tower - Zagreb
Lotrscak tower Gornji grad - the Upper Town Review

You can climb this prominent tower dating back to the 13th century for a fee and enjoy the view from up there. Inside the tower there is also a souvenir shop. Every day at 12 noon a small cannon is fired so that the Zagrebians know what time it is. I haven't seen it fired but I heard it.

Directions: it right at the upper station of the funicular

Mirogoj cemetery - Zagreb
Mirogoj cemetery Mirogoj Review

This cemetery must be one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Along the road there is a gallery of graves with statues. Then behind the church you will find the grave of Franjo Tudman, the first Croatian president.

Directions: Mirogoj, take bus no. 106 from Kaptol

Here are a few pretty sights from Upper Town. Some are museums, or a city tower or just beautiful iron works.

Maksimir Park Parkovi - the Parks Review

I immediately fell in love with this park. It's big, it has some sights, benches to have a seat and relax and it's big enough to take a decent walk or for jogging. The attractions are a small lake, a church, monuments, the pavilion of echos, a couple of cafés and the zoo.

Tkalciceva street - Zagreb
Tkalciceva street

This is a very attractive street full of cafés and restaurants, an open-air living room I was told. There are also shops and a few steep staircases bring you up to Upper Town if you want to. I think that in a few years time, all the old derelic buildings will have disappeared. Right now there is an interesting mix left.

Sljeme - the house mountain - Zagreb
Sljeme - the house mountain

If you want to know how to get up here by public transport, then please check the separate tip unter transportation. On Sljeme you find a high TV tower, a few restaurants and you have a view to the back of the mountain range. The hiking paths right on the top are rather uncomfortable because of the the snow machine that are used in winter. In winter it's a skiing area with ski lifts and a chair lift. Unfortunately, there is no decent map up there and no decent hiking signs. So if you plan to hike you better get the information from the tourist office in town first. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of information up there. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the ride to get there.

Modern statues - Zagreb
Modern statues

There are several of these statues over the old town. You can share a bench with a guy if you are lonely or have your picture taken with a lady.

Exhibition pavilion - Zagreb

Exhibition pavilion

Historical buildings/museums

There are various historical buildings which contain museums or galleries etc.

On photo no. 1 we have the Exhibition Pavilion which was built before WW2 and houses the Croatian Artists' Center. It is on the Square of the Victims of Fashism.

On the second photo is the National Bank of Croatia which used to be the stock exchange. On the third picture you find the Mimara Museum which contains a lot of artifacts from Egyptian times until the times of Rubens or Rembrandt. Nearby is also the National Archive and the monument of Marko Marulic, a Renaissance poet from Split, who in 1501 wrote the first epic in Croatian language.
