We came to Peniche on a day trip from Nazaré. We anticipated a small village and were surprised to see this town and its rugged coast. There are also sandy beaches not far from the town center.
Peniche is famous for its sardine fishing industry. You can buy sardine tins from Peniche in Switzerland. Apparently, the sardines are healthy to eat and they are not overfished and the traditional way of fishing them doesn't destroy the seafloor.
If you have half a day, you can walk around the peninsula. We did that and enjoyed it a lot. It's only 8 kilometers. Well, I must admit it became a bit tedious in the end without sidewalk and no shade, but it was well worth it. The coastline is just spectacular!
- In a nutshell:A gem - not to be missed!

Sounds like you had a lovely walk around the peninsula. I will visit Portugal for the first time next year, but only for a week so I will unfortunately not have time to go to Peniche.
I went to Porto lately and this region of Portugal makes me feel to visit the country again.
Looks like a nice place to stop along the coast. The 1st restaurant looks nice. Love iced tea!
Ein nettes Plätzchen :). Danke für die Tipps!
I love the blue sky of Peniche & also the beautiful white buildings
Hello, Sonja! The place looks very attractive indeed!
Beautiful Peniche page and pictures, especially of rocky cliffs and churches. It's a pity we were too late to visit Nossa Senhora dos Remedios Sanctuary.
Churches in Portugal have been suffering robberies in their ancient works of art, which are latter sold in black market. So, some parishes opt to close their churches. It was quite a walk to and from Cabo Carvoeiro!! Enjoyed reading your page, well done!
The Church of Misericordia is so lovely Sonja and that pastry shop is so charming. Lovely page!
Nice new pages, Sonja - the Nossa Senhora dos Remedios Sanctuary looks like a very nice place to pray at. And nice store tip where you can have ice cream and buy lottery too, hehehe...Norman :)
