Old Mellifont Abbey, foundet by St. Malachy in 1142, was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. Its foundation marked the introduction of the European monastic way of life. There are many interesting features, the most important being the Lavabo.

Open: May-End Oct: Daily 10.00-18.00

Guided tour on request.

We went there about a week ago ( 7th Nov. 02) & looked at the site without a tour guide - there are pretty good descriptions placed on the walls & we learned a lot about the history - even without a tour guide :o)
