My seventh grade class went on a 3 week camping trip to the south of Poland. It was very impressive & actually the first time ever for me to leave Eastern Germany :)
We did a lot of Mountain walks & tried our luck in speaking some English or even Russian with the Polish Youths who had joined the Camp.
But - as it was still in Communist times - the 'face' of the Camp had somewhat of a military touch.
Every morning we had to get up early enough for the 1 hour Flag-Appell (before breakfast) where the East German Flagg & the Polish flag was raised on a flagpole & the responsible "Pioneer on duty" had to report the numbers of the young people present. Then we would have to sing some patriotic Communist Songs & we had to listen to al lot of talks (an hour can be quite long when your hungry stomach hangs already below your knees :))
Every night 2 of the German & 2 of the Polish youths had to stand watch at the two entrences of the Camp. Starting at 22.00 until 6.00 am .Each group had a duty over 4 hours - then the next group would come and relieve you. Others then Owls or hungry cats or dogs didn't seem to bother about paying us a nights visit - but I suppose that most of our guys started to smoke during that time...

I have been to Poland on short trips now and again during the last few years - mostly when we passed trough it to go to Lithuania.

I had a similar experience when I stayed in a Communist youth camp in Hungary way back in 1982. Very interesting to see.
