More than a ferry port? Although I live in Hythe, a mere 14 miles from Dover, I have to say that like thousands upon thousands of "visitors" my only contact with Dover is to go through it on the A20 to the ferry port or through it on the A2 to somewhere else.
Dover is a place that longs to be more than a stepping off point and a stepping on point for overseas visitors. |
White Cliffs Experience One visit I did make was in 1999 when I took my neices to the "White Cliffs Experience" in the town centre. Sadly the the experience I had must have been matched by that of fellow visitors and it has since closed. |

The real White Cliffs High above the eastern ferry terminal is a country park owned by the National Trust. There's a parking area and then you can walk as far and wide as you want to. Lots of people take chairs and watch the comings and goings of the ferries, a bit like train spotting but even slower..... There are pleasant walks with inspiring views out to sea (on a clear day you can see 21 miles across the Channel to France) and to the South Foreland Lighthouse.
