If you drive into the centre of Paris, whatever you do, don't dilly-dally. As soon as the traffic lights start to change, the car behind will be pushing you along... and as soon as the green light goes and you don't move, the horn sounds.

Beggars, drunks, thives, yobs, pick pockets are all attracted to main line railway stations the world over and none more so than Gare d'Austerlitz. After 10pm the place is the province of the escapees from American Werewolf in Paris, just with less hair. Beware. If you have a train leaving late in the evening, then arrive as close to departure time rather than hanging about the concourse.
